10 luxury design trends

Here are 10 luxury design trends that our residential clients love in their custom homes

When it comes to designing custom homes, features that were once considered the pinnacle of luxury are becoming more mainstream. Whilst it’s not always possible to include all the features (due to budget and spatial constraints) here are our top features that we strive to have in every custom home.

  1. Home Office or Library for the Work-from-Home Lifestyle

With the rise of remote work, a dedicated home office or library has become a must-have in custom homes. Clients desire well-designed spaces that promote focus and productivity.

  2. Details

“It’s all in the details” is a saying that i am sure you have heard before! Whether it’s the trim reveal baseboards or the recessed ceiling coffers for lighting and blinds, these subtle touches go a very long way in elevating a home.

  3. Expansive Windows and Abundant Natural Light

Natural light is a coveted feature in our custom homes. Large windows allow for ample daylight and creates a bright and airy atmosphere while maximizing the connection with the outdoors. Studies show that natural light has many benefits for ones overall wellbeing.

  4. Hidden Pantry or Prep Kitchen

A hidden pantry or prep kitchen is a great way to provide discreet spaces with ample storage and organization options, ensuring a clutter-free main kitchen and enhancing overall functionality.

  5. Customized Built-Ins and Furniture

Clients appreciate the value and uniqueness of custom-built elements. Built-in cabinetry, shelving, and custom furniture really help to maximize a space. Custom furniture is one of the best ways to enhance a space with a unique touch and it guarantees that your friends won’t have the same sofa!

  6. High Ceilings

High ceilings are a must have and they create an immediate sense of luxury and spaciousness as soon as you walk through the front door. Tall ceilings (and doors) add drama, and a touch of grandeur to any spaces. We always design our main floor with a minimum of 10ft.

  7. Spa-like Master Bathroom

A luxurious master bathroom is a top priority for our clients. Clients desire spa-like features such as a spacious steam shower (with skylights and a bench), a freestanding soaking tub and luxurious materials that transform the bathroom into a private retreat for relaxation and self-care. We usually design a contained room for the toilet.

  8. Outdoor Oasis

Why trek to Muskoka when you can bring it home? We’re finding that many of our clients want to have their getaway at home. An Oasis in the city. From expansive patios and outdoor kitchens to cozy lounging areas and fire pits, it’s always important to try and achieve a seamless integration between indoor and outdoor spaces. Despite the weather (within reason), good design can accommodate outdoor relaxation and entertainment year round. Enhance the space even more with a serene swimming pool, a soothing hot tub, or an elegant fountain, adding a touch of luxury and tranquility.

  9. Smart Home Integration

There’s nothing better than asking Alexa to turn on the kitchen lights whilst you head over to make your morning coffee. Smart home technology has become a standard expectation for custom home clients. They seek integrated systems that offer convenience, energy efficiency, and enhanced security, including automated lighting, climate control, entertainment systems, and voice-activated assistants.

  10. Elevators

Only joking! This has not made it to the mainstream design features, but this luxury item is still on the list for many of our clients, especially those who are planning their ‘forever home’. With that in mind, it’s always good to design for the future (even if they don’t do it now, we make sure they can accommodate it when required). It’s also great for shlepping up your suitcases without worrying about doing in your back or nicking the walls.
